DOUBLE BASTARD ALE is a seasonal release from Stone Brewing Co., and hits the shelves each November. It can be purchased in bottles of 22 oz. and 3 litres. Ever heard of Arrogant Bastard Ale? Well, Stone describes this one as its older brother that will drop everything to kick your ass.
Appearance (15%) – One of the deepest reds I’ve ever seen. It makes me think of Steely Dan’s Crimson Tide song – where the band references Alabama’s mascot. It’s deeper than that, even. As red as red can get without being brown. I poured it as to purposely leave about a 3/4-inch head on top, which lingers. If you put your ear to it after the pour, you can hear the crackle of the head going away. After it’s down to about 1/8 inch, the sound goes away, and the head sticks around and clings to the side of the glass all the way around. (98% of 15 = 14.7)
Aroma (20%) – It’s not an overpowering scent, but offers a woody, caramel hint. I even noticed the warmth from the alcohol. As I buried my nose into the glass, I experienced the anticipation I expect right before I go to sip a beer for the first time. (91% of 20 = 18.2)
Flavor (50%) – Double Bastard Ale shouldn’t be taken lightly, because it will kick your ass if you’re not ready. It’s woody and extremely warming; I’m glad I had the window open when I had my tasting. A heavy caramel flavor is followed by a deeply-cooked citrus flavor – almost like the juice from a grapefruit rind. This beer packs as much malt as it does hop, as much sweet as bitter. (96% of 50 = 48)
Bite (10%) – The taste lingers in your mouth, but changes over a few minutes. What’s a bitter taste (from the citrus) fades to a sweetness (from the caramel). The warmth goes straight to your head; this is not a beer to be guzzled, lest you waste it by not truly experiencing each sip. (97% of 10 = 9.7)
Bumper (5%) – It’s the perfect “Novemberfest” beer. October just ain’t ready for this brew.
(100% of 5 = 5.0)
Final Verdict (95.6) – A … If you’re within 50 miles of a place that sells it, it’s worth the drive.
