Gin & Tonic

IT’S ALREADY late August, but there’s still plenty of summer left. Plenty of hot afternoons at the beach or pool. Plenty of warm nights out on the back porch. On those afternoons or evenings, take the time to drink it in … literally. Try out our top five summertime cocktails.

5. The Mojito: Sure, it came on strong a few years ago as something of a fad drink thanks for a few Bacardi commercials. But don’t let that dissuade you from enjoying this cool, clean and crisp summer treat. Take 2 oz. white rum, mint leaves to taste, 1 tablespoon sugar (optional), 1/2 oz. lime, 3 oz. club soda. Serve in a tall glass over ice.

4. Mai Tai: It’s a little more of an elaborate drink, but usually one that can be enjoyed by a large group, no matter taste preferences. Take 2 oz. white rum, 1 oz. dark rum, 1/2 oz. triple sec, 1/2 oz. amaretto, and add in a splash of sweet-and-sour mix and pineapple juice. Serve unstirred in a short glass.

3. Margarita: A summer classic and, like the Mai Tai, can usually be served to an entire room. You can take the easy route and mix equal parts tequila and one of the pre-made mixes. Or, you can go the more “from scratch” way. Take 1 shot tequila with an equal part sweet-and-sour mix. Squeeze in half a lime, and shake in a mixer. Serve over ice in the glass named for the drink.

2.  Gin & Tonic: This one’s as easy as it is refreshing. Pour 3 oz. gin over ice, then add 5 oz. tonic water. Toss in a lime wedge and serve in a tall glass. Simple.

1. Rum & Coke: It’s hard to beat this classic. It’s as easy to drink as it is hard to screw up. For this one, the rum especially, you’ll want to taste as much of the heat as you of get the cooling cola. A one-thirds solution is called for … 1/3 ice, 1/3 rum (light or dark, your preference), 1/3 cola. Toss in a lime wedge and serve in a short glass.

BONUS: Tequila and rum seem to be made for the summer. Spend a few extra bucks for the good stuff, and enjoy alone in a glass.
