Winston-Salem, N.C.
FORGIVE ME for going all Hunter S. Thompson on you, dear reader, but I’m WWR.
What’s WWR, you ask?
Writing while ripped.
Even though I’m not a Liverpool, Birmingham, Barnsley or Sheffield United fan, I watched the Reds-Blues and Tykes-Blades matches Monday afternoon. In a bar. All by myself.
Well, there were other patrons there, and a cute barkeep named Natalie kept my glass full, but it was clear to everyone else in the Fox and Hound in Winston-Salem (SHAMELESS PLUG!) what I was doing there.
I was drinking and watching football. Two matches, at the same time.
It’s not that I’m antisocial. I’ll hold a conversation in any bar, any time, anywhere.
But I’ve reached the point in my football fandom where, when you catch me saddled up to the bar with my eyes focused on a match, you may as well just sit next to me and be quiet, unless you want to discuss the game. And if you want to discuss the game, please be smart about it. Don’t ask me, “How can you watch soccer? Nobody ever scores.”
Seriously, if you even think of saying that to me, I’ll put you in your place, or just totally dismiss you with silence and a cold stare. Nobody’s forcing you to watch the telly. Shut the fuck up if you don’t have anything interesting to say.
I’m well aware that I’m coming across as a horrible bastard with these words and, the truth is, I am. I always have been a tough nut to crack.
But this is the first time that I’ve admitted it via the written word.
Exhale. I feel better.
There’s no point to this column, just a rundown of my day, or at least as much of my day as I’m willing to divulge. Some of the things I did today are probably not fit to print.
But I found a way to watch not one, but two football games as I climbed the intoxicated ladder.
It’s now 10:45 p.m. and I’m watching an FA Cup battle between Northwich Victoria and Charlton on the DVR. I can’t get enough.
Every day is becoming a football day, and I’ve got no problem with that.

In closing, I’d like for you all to copy and paste the link below. I found this piece to be well-written and inspirational. A close friend of mine wrote it and I think it’s top notch. Enjoy.
